The Importance of Being Earnest

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

A few weeks ago my good friend Ramón recently starred as the butler in The Importance of Being Earnest, set in the beautiful surroundings of New College Cloisters in Oxford. I was somehow coerced into filming the play since my college has a great camcorder that students can borrow. I then edited the footage using iMovie – my first experience with it, but it was so easy to use and I think it came out pretty well! You can check it out on my Vimeo page.

I then went along again the following night and took along my camera with the old manual lens I bought a while ago. It was the first time I’ve really used it properly and it took a while to get used to the manual focusing but I got some nice photos that would have been impossible with the kit lens! Ramón is in the background of the first one…

In other news, tomorrow is Handm@de Winchester! If there is one good thing to come out of Andy Murray losing at Wimbledon, hopefully it means people will be out and about rather than watching the final! Hopefully I will see some familiar faces there :)

Just going through some photos, I am quite pleased with this one! Taken from the garden of St Hilda’s College while we were setting up for the ball photography last weekend.

Crafterthon

Friday, March 27th, 2009

I had almost forgotten that I’d signed up for Handm@de Cambridge next week, since I’ve been so busy with wedding invite orders! Rumour has it that the Etsy head honchos will be stopping by the craft fair to say hello on their European tour… How exciting! So this weekend I’ll be having a crafterthon to try and get some stuff together… I’ve already done a few things, such as these new gift tags made from an old map.. At Christmas I made my dad a clock from an old map of Scotland which I mounted on some wood, since he loves mountains and maps. It turned out pretty nicely for the “dad who has everything”!

Handmade gift tags

I’ve been brushing up on my product photography skillz ahead of launching my shop on this site – and also designed some new packaging for my gift tags. The back has a little blurb and my shop address. What do you think?! More at Flickr.

Speaking of my new shop, if anyone would be up for testing it before it goes live I’d be really grateful – please leave a comment and I’ll send you the secret url to play with! I hope to launch it before the craft fair, as it’s going on my new moo cards which I’ll be dishing out by the handful at Cambridge!

Back from NY

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Phew, what a hectic weekend! We landed back at Heathrow at 6.30am this morning on the “red eye” (now I know why they call it that). Ah, I love New York! I’ll be back with a full report soon, but here’s a photo taken from the roof terrace of the apartment where we stayed in the West Village (thanks to a very generous friend’s gran!)

The crappy exchange rate made things SO expensive compared to when we were last there just over a year ago – like, things are almost the same price as they are here! Outrageous. Shopping was therefore curtailed but I did manage to pick up a sweet tripod, only after a hilarious argument in a camera shop (more on that to come). Oh, and also my favourite lip gloss that’s only available in the states for some insane reason (Lancome juicy tube, beach plum, if you’re interested). Yes, that’s literally all I bought in 4 days of being in New York. That, my friends, is willpower.

Muffins

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

We had some folks round for brunch on Sunday for belated pancakes since I didn’t make them on pancake day itself (although we have them often enough around here that pancake day isn’t really a novelty! Any excuse though) and also my favourite blueberry muffins from the old-school Joy of Cooking. Yum!

I’ve just added Think Bakery which looks like a great new blog for crafty businesses – check it out! (via Asking for Trouble).

So I’m off to NYC on Thursday, yippeee! See you next week :-)

New lens

Friday, February 13th, 2009

My new camera lens arrived from ebay yesterday so I had a quick play with it last night. The manual focusing and exposure were surprisingly easy to get the hang of, I followed the tips here.

Here’s a shot of my shepherds pie in progress (great recipe by Gordon Ramsay if you’re interested!). I focused on the spatula handle and pretty much everything else is out of focus because of the shallow depth of field! One downside of this lens is that because it’s old (originally designed for manual film SLRs) it doesn’t pass the aperture details back to the camera, but I’m guessing this was at the maximum aperture, 1.8.

Test shot

Here’s a picture of my camera with the new lens attached; it’s so cute! I had to take it with my old Sony camera which I can only now appreciate how rubbish it was!

Treasury, and a new toy

Thanks to adornbyamysingley for putting my gift tags in this lovely treasury!

In other news after weeks of ebay stalking I finally nabbed a 50mm f/1.8 Nikon lens on ebay last night for the bargain price of £24! Even the old ones have been going for around £50 so I’m quite pleased. It’s pretty old so only has manual focus and it’s also non-metering but that just adds to the retro fun in my opinion :) One of my reasons for going for the Nikon over a Canon was to be able to use super cheap old lenses that are just as good as the expensive modern versions, and the 50mm f/1.8 is a classic is often recommended as a good second lens to get. Here’s an interesting article on it.

6th picture

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Alice tagged me to “open the 6th picture folder on your computer, open the 6th photo and blog it. Write something about it. Then tag 6 more people to do the same.”

How fun! I just backed up my 2008 photos onto DVD and deleted them from my hard disk so the 6th photo in my 6th folder is a bit random…

A couple of years ago I attempted to scan all my grandparents old photographs; I did around 100 of them which took a whole day and that barely scraped the surface (I really need to get the rest done soon). I’m not sure exactly where or when this photo was taken, although it’s likely that it’s from Palestine where my grandad was stationed for his national service in the late 1940s. I really love this photo; it’s so striking and mysterious. I wonder where the children are now? My grandad died last year and I haven’t looked at these photos for a while so thanks Alice, it was nice to take a look again!

So now I’ll tag:

More snow!

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

It snowed again in Oxford last night! A lunchtime photoshoot with Ramón ensued and we managed to sneak up to the roof at Oriel College to take some photos.

There are more at Flickr. All this snow is definitely good practice for my new camera, although I’m petrified of slipping over and smashing it!
